Setting SMART Goals

For many of you, January was a "trial month" for 2016. You didn't work out as often as you wanted to, your meal plan for the week didn't turn out so well, or you just haven't been as productive as you expected. It's okay, that just means it's time for some re-evaluation. Things don't always work out the first time. So, back to the drawing board!

SMART goals are:

SPECIFIC

MEASURABLE

ATTAINABLE

RELEVANT

TIMELY

When you set SMART goals, you are setting clear, precise, and definite goals. It's all about knowing what you want, how you want it, how you're going to get there, and when.

SPECIFIC

Get really clear on your goals. What exactly do you want? Where? How? With whom? What are the conditions and limitations? What is the purpose of reaching the goal? Do you have an alternative way of achieving the same goal or a back up plan?

MEASURABLE

Identify exactly what it is you will feel, see, and hear when you reach your goal. Break your goals down into smaller goals.

  • How will you know if your goal is met?
  • What will be your proof that you've accomplished your goals?

ATTAINABLE

Do you have the time, money, or skill to reach your goal? What steps can you take to reach your goal?

RELEVANT

Is your goal worth working hard to accomplish? Is it meaningful to you or is it something others think you should do? Would it delay or prevent you from achieving a more important goal? Are you willing to commit?

TIMELY

Create deadlines for your goals. Keep your timeline realistic and flexible.
Remember: Deadlines are what make people take action. Smartly distribute your goals over time leading up to your deadline.
